Your Artelo frame comes with sawtooth hangers attached to the back for vertical or horizontal display. These metal brackets engage with wall hardware to support your frame. Hanging nails are an optional add-on, so check your order before getting started.
Before you begin: two essential rules
NEVER lift, carry, or reposition your frame by grabbing only the top piece of wood (the moulding). Use both hands to support the frame from underneath, near the bottom corners, and keep it steady as you move it.
NEVER hang your frame by placing a nail or screw behind the moulding and resting the wood directly on it. The wall hardware must engage the installed sawtooth hanger. The frame's weight should rest on its hanging hardware, not on the moulding.
What you'll need
A pencil and measuring tape
A level
A hammer or screwdriver, depending on your wall hardware
Wall fixings suitable for your wall type and the weight of the complete frame
A clean, soft surface to rest the frame on
1. Unpack your frame and choose its orientation
Remove the packaging and protective corners. Support the frame from underneath with both hands as you turn it over and place it face down on a clean, soft surface.
Decide whether your artwork will hang vertically or horizontally. Locate the sawtooth hanger—or pair of hangers—nearest the top in that orientation. Keep the small turnbuttons around the frame's edges closed; they secure the backing and are not hanging points.
If your frame has two hangers positioned across the top, use both, with a separate wall fixing for each. No hanging wire is needed.
Use the installed sawtooth hanger on the back of the frame, not the moulding or the turnbuttons.
2. Choose your spot
Support the frame from underneath with both hands and hold it against the wall. Adjust its position until it looks right, then ask someone to lightly mark where the top edge will sit. Get help with larger frames so you can move them safely and check the placement.
If you're hanging several frames, plan the arrangement and spacing before installing any hardware.
3. Measure where the hanger will rest
With the frame resting face down on a soft surface, measure down from its top edge to the notch inside the sawtooth hanger where the nail or screw will support it. Transfer that distance to the wall below your top-edge mark.
Also measure the hanger's position from the side of the frame so your wall mark lines up horizontally.
For two hangers, measure and mark both support points. Check the spacing carefully and use a level to keep the frame straight. Measure each frame individually, even when hanging matching sizes.
4. Install the right wall hardware
Choose a headed picture-hanging nail, screw, or compatible picture hook rated for the complete frame's weight and your wall material. A screw in hollow drywall generally needs a suitable anchor unless it is secured into a stud. Brick and concrete require appropriate masonry fixings.
Follow the hardware manufacturer's installation instructions. Leave enough clearance for the sawtooth hanger to engage securely behind the nail or screw head. If using a picture hook, align the point where the hanger will rest with your mark; the hook's nail hole may sit above it.
Do not position a nail or screw so that the frame's moulding rests directly on it. The fixing must engage the installed sawtooth hanger.
5. Lower the frame onto the hangers
Support the frame from underneath with both hands, near its bottom corners. Position the sawtooth hanger just above the wall fixing, then lower the frame gently until the fixing engages inside the hanger.
If your frame uses two upper hangers, make sure both are engaged. Keep supporting the bottom while you check that the frame is seated securely. Gradually release its weight only once you have confirmed that the hangers are supporting it.
Never lift the frame by its top moulding, and never rest the moulding directly on the wall nail or screw.
6. Level and check the frame
Once the frame is securely seated on its hangers, place a level along its top edge. If the frame tilts, support it from underneath with both hands and lift it slightly to take the weight off the hanger. Reposition it on a neighboring notch, lower it again, and check that it is secure before releasing your hands.
If a frame supported by two hangers remains uneven, recheck the height of the wall fixings. Avoid dragging the frame sideways while its weight is resting on the hardware.
Support the bottom corners with both hands whenever you lift or reposition your frame.
Troubleshooting
The hanger won't catch. Take the frame down, supporting it from underneath. Check that the nail or screw head fits the hanger opening and has enough clearance for the bracket to engage securely.
The frame feels loose. Keep supporting the frame and take it down to check the wall fixing. Confirm that each required hanger is fully engaged before leaving the frame in place. Do not use the moulding as an alternative hanging point.
